Sold! To Number 188

On Sunday, Chris and I went to an estate auction at the fairgrounds. It was a first for both of us, and I can definitely say that we now have the itch to go to another!

Another Addison Auction

The auction was run by Another Addison Auction, a family-run business that’s local to our town. I’ve seen plenty of auction scenes on TV (anyone else out there watch Market Warriors on PBS?), but it’s so impressive listening to the auctioneer sell the items in-person. The family that runs the auctions acts like such a well-oiled machine, and they were able to get through item after item really quickly.

I took this video so you all can hear the auctioneer. The guy who’s keeping track of the bidders on the butter churn kills me!

At the auction, we were lucky number 188. After you won an item, you simply raised up your number card, and they had ladies on computers keeping track of how much each bidder purchased.

It was chilly on auction day, so coffee was a must!

And by the way, I wore a vintage barrette, Forever 21 Cardigan, Lime Striped Top C/O OASAP, Madewell Jeans, Converse All Star Shoes

Chris and I made out like bandits! Here’s what I got:

Cake Stand

A pretty cake stand.

Antique Cups

These goblets with hobnail bases.

Cut Glass Cups

Cut glass cups. I didn’t really want these, but they came in a box with the hobnail cups above.

Antique Mail Sorter

Two of these mail sorters.

Chris got some nice tools for himself, and our grand total for the day was $40. A steal considering one of Chris’ tools alone is probably worth $40. Others at the auction were getting awesome deals on furniture and farm equipment. They actually paid a guy a dollar to take a super 70s-looking sofa set. Ha! If any of the furniture had been “our style,” we could have gotten quite the deal!

Have you ever been to an auction? If not, maybe check out your local newspaper and see if there are any coming up in your area!

Thank you for all of the new house well wishes this week. Like I said on Tuesday, we are just thrilled and the excitement hasn’t worn off yet. This weekend will be spent tackling our to-do list. Chris has several tasks slated for the exterior of the house, while I’ll be unpacking the remainder of our things, getting everything organized, cleaning, and I would like to plant some annuals (if it’s not too early…I’ll have to ask my mom about that one…haha) I’m hoping to get everything presentable enough to post a “tour” next week.

Other than that, I’m hoping Chris and I can take a break from our chores to explore our new area a little bit. We’re still in the Indianapolis area, but now outside of the city. We live fairly close to the historic downtown of our new city, which looks pretty charming! There are some antique stores, little shops, local eateries, a spa, theatre, and a historic home to tour. All right up my alley!

What are you up to this weekend?!

My “Junk” Drawer — Trinket Tuesday

junk drawer trinkets

chocolate box that holds my bow ban.do / 2011 planner / travel jewelry case / vintage handkerchiefs / luggage tag / big bow ban.do / Kate Spade box / “H” tissues / mini sewing kit / vintage peace sign headband / necklaces / vintage powder makeup tin / lime wayfarers / fork bracelet / black flower hairpiece

I’m a fairly organized person. I keep our apartment tidy. I make our bed every morning. And I like for everything to have a spot. But I’m not going to lie: I have a “junk” drawer.

Our dresser has two slim drawers at the top where we each keep our treasures. Chris has his pocket watch, pocket knife, coins, and handkerchiefs in his.

In mine? Trinkets! It’s just random keepsakes and treasures that fit in this little catch-all drawer — far from junk, in my opinion!

What’s in your junk drawer?

Our Wedding in Matchbook Magazine! — Trinket Tuesday

Several months ago I discovered Matchbook Magazine, and it’s now one of my obsessions. You know how I’m all about living a charmed life. Matchbook is  the official “field guide” to achieving just that!

I am particularly fond of the July issue of Matchbook because our wedding is featured in the Just Married section on page 118! Check it out:

Susan Koger, founder of Modcloth, is on the cover of this month’s issue. I’m a big Modcloth fan, and I love Susan’s story of entrepreneurship and following her dreams. She’s such an inspiration to young women everywhere!

Also be sure to check out EmmaKissTina’s Elizabeth Taylor illustration on page 117. Kristina created my blog header after I discovered her in Matchbook Magazine a while back. I can’t sing her praises enough!

If you haven’t read Matchbook Magazine yet, you really should! It’s free, and it’s chock-full of fashion, culture, decor, food…and trinkets!

For today’s Trinket Tuesday, I’m going to feature some of my favorite trinkets from the July magazine! Check them out, and be sure to head over and read July’s issue (plus every back issue in the archives ;) )

Anthropologie Knickknacks — Trinket Tuesday

Usually, the trinkets I feature on here are antiques — or at least vintage. However, I do love new, modern-day trinkets, too!

One of my favorite places to buy new knickknacks and trinkets is Anthropologie. They have a really eclectic and pretty mix of vases, dishes, kitchenware, and collectibles. And they’re usually very affordable!

As part of my bridesmaid gift, Vanessa included a couple gems from Anthropologie. I am in love with them!

First is this turquoise and yellow vase — one of my favorite color combinations!

I have one of my birthday peonies sitting in it. It’s such a pretty decoration for our table top.

anthropologie dish

The other gift is this cute little dish that’s perfect for displaying rings and other baubles on my dresser.

I live really close to Anthropologie, and I love to go over there to wander around and see what they have. Here are some other trinkets I’m dying to add to our apartment:

Made in Occupied Japan Figurines –Trinket Tuesday

I found this sweet, “Made in Occupied Japan” Colonial Couple at the Carmel Antique Mall. Christopher and I go to this antique mall often to hunt for trinkets and pieces for our apartment.

Made in Occupied Japan colonial figurines

I used these little guys as wedding decorations. They stood in front of our wedding cake! The wonderful Sara and Mallary photography captured some adorable photos of these perfect little trinkets.

wedding figurines

I think an entire wedding theme could be built around antique figurines!

Whenever I purchase an antique, I try to do a little research to see if I found a worthless gem or a valuable treasure. I learned that  these two were made during the years after WWII ended when America occupied Japan. A certain number of items leaving Japan had to be stamped with the “Made in Occupied Japan” marking, but the Japanese were embarrassed about this, so they tried to let as many as possible get through without a stamp. Today, stamped figurines are of more value than non-stamped ones. Mine are stamped!

That’s about all I know about these little guys, but valuable or not, they’re two of my favorite trinkets!
