Vintage Plaid & The Great Outdoors

What I wore: Vintage plaid shirt (my mom’s), Madewell shorts, Minnetonka Moccasins

With the great outdoors trend, as well as the dip back to  ’90s fashion that we seem to be taking right now, plaid is back in a big way for fall. I couldn’t be happier about this because I have an awesome vintage plaid top that mom wore in the ’70s. Is there anything better than wearing soft, broken-in plaid on a brisk fall day?

I wore this outfit for a day of outdoor adventure during our trip. Mountain viewing, stream wading, trail hiking, and bear sighting were all enjoyed in the comfort of one cozy, plaid shirt.

A Day at the Park…

Where I wore it: The weather this weekend was beyond amazing. Saturday was not too hot, not too cold, sunny, a little breeze — a perfect day for Holliday Park.

Chris and I stopped at Fresh Market on the way and picked up some sparkling juice and snacks. We enjoyed these in the sun and spent the afternoon hiking the trails, sunbathing, and taking in the ruins. I know I said this last time we went there, but this park makes me feel like I’ m somewhere in Europe because of the ruins.

I’ve always been curious about what the ruins are from and where they came from, so I did  a little research. Turns out they’re from the St. Paul Building in New York City. This building, which was New York’s first skyscraper, was designed by19th-century architectural sculptor Karl Bitter. Bitter also designed the facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The three large statues atop the columns are known as the Races of Man, and these are made of Indiana limestone. They represent African American, Asian, and Caucasian races working together  – on the original building they appeared to be holding the skyscraper on their backs.

When the St. Paul Building was going to be torn down in the 1950s to make room for a more modern skyscraper, the Western Electric Company held a competition to see which US city would get to house the statues. Needless to say, Holliday Park right here in Indianapolis won the competition. Indianapolis artist Elmer Taflinger  designed a reproduction of the building’s facade to hold the Races of Man statues.

The artist, Taflinger, turned out to be a bit of a diva during the creation of the project. There was never enough funding for all his ideas to be implemented, and he was always trying to make changes and additions during the construction process. Over the years as other buildings were demolished, Taflinger changed the project’s plans to incorporate any and all salvageable pieces, including a horse trough from the Indianapolis Fountain Square monument, six Greek columns from the Sisters of Good Shepherd Convent, eight statues from the prior Marion County courthouse, columns from the Broadway Christian church, and part of an alter from St. Paul’s Church.

In 1976, Taflinger wanted to expand the project in honor of the Bicentennial Celebration. His idea, known as the Constitution Mall, symbolizes the American Republic. It includes a reflecting pool, lines of trees to represent each state of the union, 13 evergreens to represent the 13 original colonies, a large oak to represent Washington D.C., and slabs of Indiana limestone inscribed with the preamble to the constitution.

Over the years, a couple of the statues had to be removed as they deteriorated, the reflection pool can no longer hold water due to leaks, and some of the trees had to be replaced after a hard winter, but for the most part the park is just as it was in 1977.

So there’s your history lesson for the day. Who knew that right here in Indianapolis, we have such a slice of history?

Fall Wish List

cute fall outfit 2012

You guys, all this cooler-than-usual weather has me ready for fall. It won’t be too long until it’s time for apple orchards, pumpkin picking, and cider sipping. Not to jump the gun, but I made this wish list. Just some things that I’d love to have — a girl can dream, right?

This fall, the trends I’m looking forward to are deep shades of red, big and cozy knits, ladylike details and silhouettes, and the ‘great outdoors.’ If you want to check out the products above, you can see my Polyvore here. What are your favorite fall trends so far?

Well, we made it half way through the week! How’s yours going so far? I’ve been feeling pretty lethargic this week — I think I’m still catching up on sleep from the weekend! In the evenings, it seems all I can muster the energy to do is watch tv and catch up on my reading. Oh — and we have been doing a lot of work on planning a vacation for this fall, which I am really looking forward to :) .

Cute Fall Outfits

If I didn’t make it clear already in my Anderson Orchard post, I love everything about fall. Changing leaves, pumpkins, cider, and hayrides are some of my fall favorites. But there are two more reasons why I love the season:  fashion and cool, cloudy days spent inside sipping hot beverages.

Does a sweet vintage outfit not make you think of a cup of piping hot chamomile tea? This fall, I’m loving all fashion that’s a nod to vintage and retro pieces.

Raise your hand if you love that leggings are on trend this season! I adore dressing up a pair of leggings with a classy sweater, pretty accessories, and some riding boots for a look that’s cozy and a little equestrian! It’s the perfect outfit for going to get coffee on a chilly fall morning.

Color blocking: If you haven’t tried the trend yet, it’s still going strong, so now’s your chance. Simply pair two or more blocks of color together in an outfit. I think blue, yellow, and orange look great and appropriate for fall. This look reminds me of a swanky bistro that serves green tea in bold Fiestaware!

Please tell me, what’s your favorite trend for fall?

A Day at Anderson Orchard

On Saturday, Christopher and I went to Anderson Orchard to choose a pumpkin, sip cider, and stock up on homegrown Jonathan  apples.

Anderson Orchard Indianapolis

I consider myself to be somewhat of a country gal. I grew up in a rural area of Northern Kentucky. I had a horse and was active in 4H. And two years ago I worked at farm for the summer and fall months. I worked in the stand selling peaches and tomatoes during summer and apples and pumpkins during fall.

These days, fun days outside are too few and far between. Of course, I had to wear my mom’s old cropped flannel top from the 70s.

And I also wore one of my DIY bow clips!

Everything about fall is so beautiful, from the wonderful temperatures, to the COLORS. Getting to see fall’s colors makes dealing with the Midwest’s crazy weather totally worth it.

My prized purchase from our day at the orchard is a tiny little gourd that looks like a miniature pumpkin — it’s a trinket made by nature!

Which, I’ve found doubles as a lovely little DIY ring holder!

Do you make a point to go to the orchard each fall?
