3 DIY Tulle Hair Clips

diy tulle hair clips

I don’t think it’s any secret that I like tulle, so I was very excited when Ribbons.com sent me three colors of Paper Mart tulle and a slew of alligator clips, and gave me a mission to create something cute!

diy tulle hair clips

may have gone a little overboard and made three cute somethings! The three hair clips pictured above were my labor of love on Saturday afternoon. They’re simple, fun, and look really cute holding back bangs or even clipped on your collar.

Here’s how I made them:

1. Tulle Flower Hair Clip

diy tulle flower

To make the flower hair clip, I simply folded the tulle accordion style until I had my desired number of layers. I cut a circle out of the folded tulle layers and kept all of the circles together by using two of the clips. I then sewed a light grey button in the center of the circle to look like the center of a flower. Lastly, I hot glued the flower onto an alligator clip. Let it dry, and voila!

2. Tulle Pom Pom Hair Clip

diy tulle pom pom hair clip

The pom pom ended up being my favorite! I made this by wrapping tulle around a large fork. Put a ribbon through the center tines and tie it around the middle tightly, sliding the tulle off the fork. Slide the alligator clip under the ribbon. Then, cut the folded edges, fluff out the sides, and you have a pom! You can also make this by folding the tulle accordion style, tying a ribbon in the center, and fluffing out the tulle.

3. Tulle Bow Hair Clip

diy tulle bow hair clip

This one is so easy to make! Simply wrap the tulle around a normal-sized fork. Cut a thin piece of tulle and tie it around the center of the tulle-wrapped fork. Slide the tulle off the fork and tighten the tulle tie and double knot it. Slide the alligator clip under the knot, trim the edges of the thin tulle strip, and there you have it!

These little guys are versatile, too! They don’t have to be clips. You could make them into pins, headbands, party decor, scrapbooking or card making embellishments, and more.

DIY Wildfox Heart Sweater – Make the glitter heart sweatshirt above with my easy-breezy instructions. I wore my heart sweatshirt last weekend!

Honestly, I’m not even positive what Chris and I are doing for Valentine’s Day. This week has been pretty busy, so we haven’t had time to sit down and figure it out. We’ve tossed around doing dinner at our favorite spot (if we can get a last-minute reservation!), or just staying in, cooking dinner, and perhaps some champagne. I love Valentine’s Day, but it sure did sneak up on us this year!

Tell me, what are your Valentine’s Day plans??

DIY Botanical & Animal Art

diy illustrated bird plates

I love the look of old botanical and animal illustrations, so I was thrilled when my friend Moriya shared an online database that has TONS of botanical literature that is free to download. PS - Check out Moriya’s blog, where she shares fantastic DIY home projects!

The site, Botanicus.org,  is a little hard to navigate, but if you click around enough, you will find scientific illustrations of plants, animals, birds, and more. I spent an entire evening looking through the site, and I ended up printing out a few illustrations to decorate our apartment.

The first two illustrations I printed are these birds:

diy illustrated bird plates

I printed them on off-white card stock for an antiqued look.

I then went to Goodwill and bought old, thin, and gold photo frames.

They cost me a whopping $2.

I trimmed around the illustrations so they would fit in the frames.

And now I have lovely and inexpensive dining room decor!

I also printed some fruit illustrations for the kitchen:

And I have some flowers for our bedroom. I just need to find the perfect frames for them!

DIY: Inspired by Wildfox Couture

diy wildfox couture heart jumper

Now that we’re nearing the cold-weather months, I thought I’d uncover one of my favorite DIY projects from last year: my DIY Heart Jumper that’s inspired by Wildfox Couture. My DIY version has a pretty strong resemblance to the real deal, and it was so easy to make!

Making your own DIY version is as is as simple as 1,2,3!

To make the sweatshirt, all you have to do is stencil a heart onto a simple white sweatshirt (I used the Hanes special!). Then, mix red glitter (or whatever color your heart desires) with Mod Podge — a 50/50 ratio will do. Paint the sweatshirt with the glitter mixture (I did about two coats) until the heart is completely covered and no white shows from beneath. Let it dry — and voila!

For more detailed instructions, as well as information on washing, check out my full post HERE!

Wildfox doesn’t sell this heart jumper anymore, but check them out for lots of fun, funky, and festive garb!

DIY Aloe Face Scrubs

rosita the aloe plant

Meet Rosita: My super sassy aloe vera plant. I bought Rosita two years ago, and she has grown like crazy since then. I have a serious green thumb when it comes to Rosita.

Not only does Rosita look awesome sitting in our apartment, but she comes in handy as well. There are all sorts of benefits to aloe plants. They’re good for your skin (especially when it comes to burns and itching), and you can also drink aloe juice to aid in digestion, mouth health, detoxing, weight loss, and lots more.

I’ve made a couple really good scrubs and moisturizers out of Rosita, and I’m going to share my two favorite recipes!

When making anything out of aloe gel, you first need to know how to get the gel. It’s pretty easy:

  1. With a knife, cut a leaf off your aloe plant. The leaves toward the bottom are the oldest and have the most nutrients. If you don’t have an aloe plant, you can buy leaves at most grocery stores. Look at the leaf where you cut. In the middle you should see a clearish gel — that’s what we’re after!
  2. On a cutting board, lay the leaf flat and cut off the skin on each edge.
  3. Then, carefully slice off the skin on the two sides of the aloe leaf. You should be leaving behind the gel. That’s it!

Aloe Cornmeal Honey Scrub

This one is a great exfoliant!

Mix together 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel, 1 teaspoon honey, and 2 tablespoons cornmeal. Apply the scrub to your skin and massage it in. Rinse it off with warm and then cool water. Apply your moisturizer.

Aloe Olive Oil Sugar Scrub

This one exfoliates and moisturizes.

Mix 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, and 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel. Massage the mixture into your skin. Rinse it off with warm water and then cool.

Any other aloe lovers out there?

DIY Mosaic Tray

DIY mosaic tray

Remember this sweet blue planter (4th image down)? Well, it got knocked off a windowsill and fell to its demise. RIP pretty blue planter.

The good news is I was able to re-purpose the pieces to make a nifty mosaic-esque coffee table tray. Here’s what I used:

diy mosaic tray supplies

Two 50 cent mugs from Goodwill (to break into pieces) + gorilla glue + the broken planter + a $2 wooden tray from Goodwill.
The “tray” is more of a wooden trivet. It’s about 8″ x 8″.

DIY mosaic

I put the mugs and the broken planter in a few layered plastic bags. I took them outside with a hammer and broke them into pieces. (Yes, I’m sure my neighbors thought I was crazy.)

how to make a mosaic

I traced a rough outline of the area of the tray that would be the mosaic. I then tentatively set out the pattern I wanted.

how to make a DIY mosaic

Then, I started gluing! As I went, I ended up not following my tentative plan as I saw better spots for each “tile.”

Voila! A unique coffee table tray .

Chris thinks I should add grout between the tiles, but I kind of like how it looks this way. We’ll see!

DIY Perfume Bottle Illustration

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of cute fashion and beauty-related illustrations decorating the homes of some of my favorite bloggers. They’re simple sketches of favorite products or designs, and they look so perfect sitting on a dresser, vanity, or bedside table!

I have little-to-no artistic talent, but I discovered that it’s pretty easy to DIY your own perfume bottle illustration. It’s as simple as tracing your favorite bottle! Here’s the illustration I made of Chanel N°5:

diy chanel bottle illustration

I chose Chanel N°5 because it’s classic! And the bottle has a very basic design with simple lines. Here’s how I did it:

diy perfume bottle illustration

  1. I had Chanel N°5 (the image linked above) open on the computer with the screen as bright as it could go. I put a piece of computer paper against the screen and lightly traced the outline with a pencil. Don’t push too hard and damage your screen!
  2. After I outlined the bottle with pencil, I took the paper off the screen and went over my tracing with a fine-tipped black Sharpie marker. It’s helpful to use a ruler for really straight lines.
  3. Next, I colored in the bottle using a gold yellow shade to match the hue of the perfume.
  4. After I finished all the tracing and coloring, I cut the illustration out to fit my 4-inch-by-4-inch frame.
Voila! A cute and easy Chanel perfume bottle illustration:

It turned out pretty cute, and it’s sitting on my dresser right now. You could do this DIY with many different things like nail polish,  simple shoes, or handbags. I think I’m going to try my hand at making Essie nail polish bottle illustrations next.

If you try this DIY out, let me know what you illustrate!

Bachelorette Party Invitations DIY

cute bachelorette party invitations diy

One of my dear friends is getting married soon, and I am incredibly honored to be her maid of honor (technically, matron of honor, but that makes me sound OLD). Last week, I was a busy bee making her bachelorette party invitations. I knew I wanted something cooler than the store-bought ones that you just hand write the details on, so I got a little crafty and made some cute invites that I think fit her personality and style!

I was inspired by the heart bum and bra cookies my friend Karin made for me! I wanted to make paper ones with my friend’s sizes on them so party goers know what to get her for gifts. They’re adorable and so easy to make. Here’s what I used:

how to make paper hearts bra and panty size

To make them, all you need is a heart paper cutter (I have the Martha Stewart one), lace, a pen, scissors, and glue. To make them, start by cutting the hearts. Leave the “bra” hearts whole, but cut the points of the hearts off the bum ones. Then, glue a little piece of lace on the top of one side of the whole heart (demonstrated in photo below); the side you glue it on is the back. It should look like a bit of fancy lace at the “cleavage.” Then, glue a bit of lace at the top of the bum to look like the elastic of undies. Write your bride’s sizes on them — and voila — cute little bras and bums for your invitations!

paper hearts with bra and panty sizes

This is what the back of my bra hearts looked like.

diy bachelorette party invitations

I rubber cemented my bras and bums onto pink card stock, and also glued on a little poem:

Sassy Satin
Lovely Lace
Let’s put a smile on her groom’s face!

On the back of the cardstock, I rubber cemented the party details. (Sorry for the ugly marking out — I don’t want any party crashers!) I played around with fonts for a playful look. I found some cute fonts HERE. They let you “pay” whatever price you want for fonts. Technically, you could download all of them for free, but I recommend paying a little donation at least once :) .

And there you have it! Cute and easy DIY bachelorette party invitations!

Homemade Valentines

I’ve loved Valentine’s Day since a tender young age (cynics be warned!). When I was little, the holiday meant getting a box of chocolates from my dad and Beanie Baby (Total 90s child. I got my first Beanie Baby in 4th grade. It was Mystic the unicorn. I. remember. everything.) from my mom.

As a wee elementary school girl, passing out Valentines at school (even to the kid with the snotty nose) meant a BIG decision. Should I get 101 Dalmations, Barbie, or Lisa Frank? Even harder was deciding who got what Valentine. I would carefully consider which card to give the stinky boy so he wouldn’t get the wrong idea. Boys – BLEGH! And my best friends got the cutest cards, of course.

These days, Valentine’s Day means a nice dinner with my husband and maybe a pretty little piece of jewelry. And instead of those store-bought cards, I like to make sweet homemade Valentines for my favorite people. Here are the cards I’ve been making this year:

homemade valentines

These are so simple and easy to make! All I really used was felt, thick paper, embroidery floss, glue, scissors, and a needle. They’re just a matter of cutting your shape of choice out of the felt and paper, tracing your design on the felt,  using a very simple stitch to go over the lines, gluing the felt to the paper, and writing a sweet note.

Christopher said he didn’t get this one. QT….like cutie….get it?! I thought it was cute.

homemade valentine owl valentine

An owl! HOOOOO doesn’t want a cutie of an owl for a Valentine?

I wrote this on the back of the owl Valentine. I’m a poet and didn’t know it.

homemade valentine heart with bow

I gave this pretty little Valentine to Christopher! I also wrote a full DIY for it that will be featured in a guest post next week!

MEOW! You all already know I’m a crazy cat lady. No explanation needed.

I am so excited to pass these cute homemade Valentine’s Day cards out to my loved ones. I hope they inspire you to get crafty too!

Friday Favorite Moments

Once again, TGIF! Although this week has trotted by, I am ready for the weekend. I’ve been a bit under the weather all week, so I’m ready for a relaxing weekend of sleeping in, cozying up with Christopher to watch movies, and sipping some piping hot tea. To get the weekend started right, I’m going to share some of my favorite moments from this past week:

tulle and trinkets elle and blair feature
My first favorite moment is VERY exciting! The lovely Youtube vloggers, Elle and Blair Fowler, highlighted Tulle and Trinkets on their website! They chose five bloggers to be featured in their Blogger Member Spotlight, and Tulle and Trinkets made the cut! A screenshot from the post is above, but see the rest of the feature here.

the local restaurant Indianapolis

This past weekend was “date weekend” for Christopher and me. On Saturday evening, we went out to a lovely dinner at The Local, an amazing Indianapolis restaurant that serves fresh and local food. They get a lot of their ingredients from Indiana farms — and I think that is so cool. And their food is DELISH.

bouquet of flowers

To start date weekend off right, Christopher was a total sweetheart and got me these pretty flowers. Fresh flowers do amazing things to raise spirits during winter’s gloom!

kroger sushi

So let me start by saying I”m very skeptical of sushi. I was convinced I didn’t like the stuff because A) the texture is weird and B) eating raw seafood gives me the creeps. BUT, I’ve discovered that there are certain kinds of sushi that I really like, including California Rolls.

valentines day craft supplies

I have been crafting a lot this past week, making homemade Valentines for all the special people in my life! Stay tuned for more on that later.

teavana infuser steeping tea

Christopher got me this Teavana infuser for Christmas, as well as some loose leaf chai tea that I have really been enjoying.

hermes the cat

And lastly, have you ever seen such a goofy cat? I captured this classic Hermes moment the other night. Hermes likes to lay with his hind legs sticking straight out behind him. I’ve never seen a cat lay like that — and it’s hilarious!
