My “Junk” Drawer — Trinket Tuesday

junk drawer trinkets

I’m a fairly organized person. I keep our apartment tidy. I make our bed every morning. And I like for everything to have a spot. But I’m not going to lie: I have a “junk” drawer.

Our dresser has two slim drawers at the top where we each keep our treasures. Chris has his pocket watch, pocket knife, coins, and handkerchiefs in his.

In mine? Trinkets! It’s just random keepsakes and treasures that fit in this little catch-all drawer — far from junk, in my opinion!

What’s in your junk drawer?

Our Wedding in Matchbook Magazine! — Trinket Tuesday

Several months ago I discovered Matchbook Magazine, and it’s now one of my obsessions. You know how I’m all about living a charmed life. Matchbook is  the official “field guide” to achieving just that!

I am particularly fond of the July issue of Matchbook because our wedding is featured in the Just Married section on page 118! Check it out:

Susan Koger, founder of Modcloth, is on the cover of this month’s issue. I’m a big Modcloth fan, and I love Susan’s story of entrepreneurship and following her dreams. She’s such an inspiration to young women everywhere!

Also be sure to check out EmmaKissTina’s Elizabeth Taylor illustration on page 117. Kristina created my blog header after I discovered her in Matchbook Magazine a while back. I can’t sing her praises enough!

If you haven’t read Matchbook Magazine yet, you really should! It’s free, and it’s chock-full of fashion, culture, decor, food…and trinkets!

For today’s Trinket Tuesday, I’m going to feature some of my favorite trinkets from the July magazine! Check them out, and be sure to head over and read July’s issue (plus every back issue in the archives ;) )

DIY Mosaic Tray

DIY mosaic tray

Remember this sweet blue planter (4th image down)? Well, it got knocked off a windowsill and fell to its demise. RIP pretty blue planter.

The good news is I was able to re-purpose the pieces to make a nifty mosaic-esque coffee table tray. Here’s what I used:

diy mosaic tray supplies

Two 50 cent mugs from Goodwill (to break into pieces) + gorilla glue + the broken planter + a $2 wooden tray from Goodwill.
The “tray” is more of a wooden trivet. It’s about 8″ x 8″.

DIY mosaic

I put the mugs and the broken planter in a few layered plastic bags. I took them outside with a hammer and broke them into pieces. (Yes, I’m sure my neighbors thought I was crazy.)

how to make a mosaic

I traced a rough outline of the area of the tray that would be the mosaic. I then tentatively set out the pattern I wanted.

Then, I started gluing! As I went, I ended up not following my tentative plan as I saw better spots for each “tile.”

Voila! A unique coffee table tray .

Chris thinks I should add grout between the tiles, but I kind of like how it looks this way. We’ll see!

Vintage Lighthouse Glasses — Trinket Tuesday

50s nautical glasses

seaside cliff glasses

Would you believe it if I told you I found this set of five nautical glasses at Goodwill for 50 cents each? That’s $2.50 for the set!

I really like all-things nautical. (Check out my nautical fashion posts here and here.) It’d be my dream to someday live in a seaside cottage that looks just like a spread in Coastal Magazine. But sadly, there’s no coastline anywhere near Indianapolis. But maybe I could live lakeside.

These mid-century glasses are similar to the floral glasses I wrote about here. I’d love to find a caddy to hold this nautical set.

These would be perfect for a summery drink like mojitos, margaritas, or a sangria.

Anthropologie Shelf (Take 2) — Trinket Tuesday

As I’ve mentioned, Chris and I recently moved apartments. It’s a bigger space (yay!) and I have my own closet (double yay!).

This past weekend, one of my projects was to make a shelf out of my Anthropologie wall brackets. In our old apartment, I had a couple books as the “shelf” between the brackets (you can see that here). That was cute for our old tiny apartment, but we have a lot more wall space now, so I wanted to turn the brackets into a longer shelf!

So, on Saturday, Chris and I went to Lowe’s and picked up some supplies for our new space, including a 5-foot board to serve as the shelf! It was cheap — maybe $5.

When we got home, Chris hung up the brackets (the hard part), and I decorated it with my trinkets (the fun/easy part). It has one of our wedding photos, two houseplants in antique planters, my Andy Warhol Sam print, and a needlepoint my aunt made us for a wedding gift.

I am so pleased with the results!

Hello, Monday! We had a really great weekend. I plowed through my to-do list, and our new apartment is looking great. We made time for a fun seafood Saturday date night, and on Sunday morning I made some tasty cinnamon-sugar muffins.

The Powder Room — Trinket Tuesday

I’ve showed you trinket photos from our living room, bedroom, and kitchen. But there’s one room left that I haven’t covered….the bathroom…

Now, I’m well aware that this isn’t the room of the house where you want to be spending too much of your time. But I like to have a couple little trinkets in there to make it more like a powder room than a bathroom:

[Please excuse the awful counter-tops - we're renters.]

bathroom trinkets

A little porcelain hand from Urban Outfitters to hold jewelry, a vintage toothpick holder to hold makeup brushes, and a candle.

Remember this depression glass jar? It’s now a cotton ball holder! I think this is way better than keeping them in the bag.

Speaking of bathrooms, take a look at these dreamy powder rooms:

If I had a bathroom like one of these, it’d probably be my favorite room of the house!

I think what a person has on their mantel says a lot about them. The fireplace is often the focal point of a room, so whatever someone chooses to display there is usually a reflection of them and what they like.

Lots of family photos show someone is family-oriented. A mantel packed with knickknacks means they’re a collector. A stark mantel may mean someone is a minimalist, while a perfectly symmetrical display may show someone is very organized.  See what I mean? A mantel is worth a thousand words!

When it came to decorating our mantel, Chris pretty much let me decide how to decorate it. I put a few of my favorite trinkets on it, of course! I tried to make it look romantic and a little shabby chic, and I put up a couple of our photos for a personal touch. I tried to keep it somewhat symmetrical, but I didn’t want to make it too perfect :) .

So tell me, what’s on your mantel?

Ban.do Garland of Bows — Trinket Tuesday

ban.do bow headband

You may or may not know that I’m “bowsessed.” I love bows. Bow jewelry, bow fabric, bow hair accessories. It doesn’t matter what it is!

A couple years ago I saw Taylor Swift wearing a very pretty bow headband:

I. Had. To. Have. It. So I did some research and found out that it’s a Ban.do. They make pretty hair, shoe, and clothes accessories.

After some major hint dropping, Chris got me the headband for Valentine’s Day — so sweet! It’s a very nice and well-made piece that I can pass on to my future daughter. It’s pretty fancy, so I don’t wear it all that often — but when I do I feel like a princess! It’s a new trinket, but one that I’ll hold onto until it’s an old one.

Here are some other Ban.dos I’m loving:

Vintage Postcards, Vacation Edition — Trinket Tuesday

Lately, I’ve been feeling like I need a vacation. Sadly, there’s no vacation in sight for me, but what I can do is enjoy my antqiue postcards!

These are scans of postcards from my tiny collection. (Remember my vintage Valentine postcards?) These cards are from the 1940s and 50s, and I think they’re so much cooler than today’s postcards.

I think my favorite postcard from the batch is the water skiing ladies — how fabulous are their bikinis?! This postcard represents “Ski Jumping at Cypress Gardens.” It’s from Merritt to Flossie and Everett — my ancestors! Can you imagine receiving such a cool postcard in the mail? What a treat that would be!

Which card is  your favorite?!
