Madison, Indiana Trip Diary

First off, thanks for the birthday wishes! I had a wonderful birthday on Friday and a great weekend in Madison, Indiana to celebrate turning 26.

Madison is a small and quaint Indiana town nestled against the Ohio River. It’s also the next-door town to Hanover, Indiana, where Chris and I went to college.

Madison, Indiana

We got into Madison Friday night later than we planned, so after a quick dinner of burgers and fries, we turned in early so we could be up and at ‘em on Saturday.

Saturday morning was chilly and dreary, but we braved the cold and headed to good-old Hanover College to walk around campus and relive our college memories. I know most people are fond of their college years and their Alma Mater, but I  really think that Hanover is a special place. There aren’t many campuses that can rival Hanover in terms of beauty, that’s for sure!

After touring our old campus, we headed back down to Madison for an early lunch at my favorite lunch spot, The Downtowner. I get the same sandwich and potato salad every time, and it never disappoints!

From lunch, we headed to the Lanier Mansion to tour the grand, 19th-century mansion and gardens. Touring the Lanier is something that I’ve always wanted to do, but was too cheap in college to do it (even though it only costs a measly $5). The mansion itself was stately and gorgeous, but I was especially excited about the gardens, which were full of purple irises. I was sad to see the rows of peonies weren’t in bloom yet — but they looked like they were about to pop! (Side note: I learned on the tour that the state flower of Indiana is the peony. I didn’t know this!)

After we finished reveling in the beauty of the Lanier, we walked over to Lanthier Winery. We tried some of the wines, and I got a glass of their Rivertown White to sip on while we walked around their impressive gardens. (Our weekend was full of enjoying beautiful gardens, let me tell ya!) They, too, had lots of irises in bloom, in addition to many, many other flowers. They had some bright pink single chameleon peonies in bloom that had big, yellow middles. So pretty!

While we were at the winery, the sun decided to show its face and warm up the day, so I decided it was time for some shopping downtown. Since we last visited Madison, there has been a new wave of shops open up, and there were lots of people out and about shopping on Saturday. We browsed lots of antique shops, clothing boutiques, gift stores, and shops full of fun knick knacks. I got a couple bath bombs and a candle that’s a pretty good dupe of the Capri Blue Volcano from All Good Things Soaps and Such.

We worked up an appetite while shopping, so we headed back to our cottage to change for dinner. We ate at Bistro One, which is a Mediterranean restaurant. We shared the “world famous hoummus,” and it was by far the best hummus I’ve ever had. For my entree, I had the gnocchi, which was just as tasty.

After dinner, we enjoyed a beer at our old stomping grounds, Shipley’s Tavern. And we couldn’t resist a late-night stop at Hinkle’s for a milk shake and slider. (Yes, I’m on a serious cleanse this week after all the eating we did over the weekend, ha!)

I was sad to head home on Sunday morning, but was also ready to see our kitties!

By the way, we stayed at the Dove Cottage and fell in love with this quint little house! We had a river view and were in walking distance of downtown and all the action. We’ll definitely be staying there again!

Day Trip: Batesville, Indiana

Where I wore it: Like I mentioned on Friday, Chris and I decided that we needed a fun day away from the house search. So, on Saturday we got in the car and headed down I-74 to explore Batesville, Indiana. We pass this sleepy town every time we go to Cincinnati to visit our families and decided it was time to see what it has to offer!

The Sherman House Batesville, Indiana

Our first stop was The Sherman House Restaurant and Inn, where we had a delicious German lunch of sauerkraut balls, sausage, mashed potatoes, & kraut. It was sooooo good, especially the sauerkraut balls. I loved the Tudor-style  of The Sherman House building, and the inside of the restaurant looked just like a German restaurant.

We then walked around Batesville and did a little shopping. As such a small town, it didn’t take us too long to see all of the sights.

On our way back up to Indianapolis we stopped at Buck Creek Winery, where we sampled and enjoyed some wonderful wines. I especially enjoyed their cider wine.

Saturday was just the day we needed to de-stress and have a little fun. What was the highlight of your weekend?

Cozy Moose Sweater C/O Oasap, Madewell Jeans, Minnetonka Moccasins, Turban Hat Knitted by My Great-Grandma

I am seriously missing this past weekend. On Saturday, Chris, my mom, my dad, and I went to little Burlington, Kentucky and looked in the antique shops. After a stop at the grocery and a pit-stop to pick up a peppermint mocha, we spent the majority of the afternoon playing Monopoly in front of the fire. We finished an entire game, which is a feat in my opinion. I won! The evening was rounded out with a delicious dinner and watching Christmas Vacation (for the umpteenth time).

My new moose sweater from Oasap was perfect for our day with family. It was cold in Kentucky, and the oversized Nordic-print knit kept me toasty all day. It’s one of my favorites for this winter. Check it out here!

PS – While looking through my old bedroom, I found the amazing knitted turban hat that I’m wearing in these photos. It was knitted by my great-grandma many, many, meany years ago. I love it!

Thanksgiving break was one of those weekends I didn’t want to end. We spent time with both  my family and Chris’, and it was so nice! On Thanksgiving day, we had two Thanksgiving meals — one with each of Chris’ grandmas. We then spent Friday and Saturday with my mom and dad and enjoyed a bonfire, a morning antiquing, and a long afternoon playing Monopoly.

Christmas break, please hurry up!

Day Trip: Columbus & Edinburgh

What I wore: Modcloth Headband, Modcloth Peplum Sweater, Gap Pants, American Apparel Clutch, Sam Edelman Flats

Where I wore it: Saturday was a really nice day. We woke up pretty early, and I took a morning run because the weather was beautiful and warm!

After getting ready, we drove down to Columbus, Indiana. Columbus has a historic downtown area where we walked around and stopped for lunch at a great sandwich shop. I saw some elderly ladies in one shop who were fantastically dressed and looked like they stepped out of Advanced Style. I really wish I would have asked them to pose for a photo!

The next stop was our main destination: the Exit 76 Antique Mall. We’ve passed this mall many times on our way to Lousiville, but never have had time to stop. The place is HUGE, and we spent FOUR hours walking around it! Stay tuned for photos and details about my exciting purchase :) .

Vintage Plaid & The Great Outdoors

What I wore: Vintage plaid shirt (my mom’s), Madewell shorts, Minnetonka Moccasins

With the great outdoors trend, as well as the dip back to  ’90s fashion that we seem to be taking right now, plaid is back in a big way for fall. I couldn’t be happier about this because I have an awesome vintage plaid top that mom wore in the ’70s. Is there anything better than wearing soft, broken-in plaid on a brisk fall day?

I wore this outfit for a day of outdoor adventure during our trip. Mountain viewing, stream wading, trail hiking, and bear sighting were all enjoyed in the comfort of one cozy, plaid shirt.

Little White Dress

What I wore: Modcloth dress, JCrew tights, Aldo booties

If I had to choose my most-favorite dress, it would definitely be my wedding dress. But there aren’t many opportunities to wear it — aside from playing dress-up around the house.

This little white dress from Modcloth is runner-up for most-favorite dress. I wore this LWD to our wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner … and a year later I wore it to our one year wedding anniversary dinner. This little dress holds lots of good memories for me, and I hope to make many more wearing it.

Do you have a dress that has lots of good memories attached to it?

Gatlinburg Trip Diary: Day 5

This is my last Gatlinburg Trip Diary post! Thanks for sticking with me. I feel like one of those people who make their friends sit through hours of vacation slides!

We started our last full day of Gatlinburg with a morning of fishing for Chris. I sat on a blanket creekside while he fished and spent the morning reading my book, Paris My Sweet (which I finished on our drive home and it was really good!).

Sadly, Chris didn’t have much fishing luck. We went to a couple different locations, but he didn’t see any fish anywhere we went. I think he had fun, though, wearing his waders and fly fishing at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains.

After a picnic lunch, we did a motor tour of part of the Smoky Mountains National Park. It was a very scenic drive with gorgeous views of the mountains. You could get out of your car to take photos or even walk off the beaten path a bit. The best part was that we saw four black bears! They were back in the woods a ways, so we couldn’t get a good photo, but it was awesome to see!

We then headed to downtown Gatlinburg for one last day of exploring the town and shops. We played “Hillbilly Golf,” a fun hillside miniature golf course. You ride a cart to the top of a steep hill and play down the hill. Each hole had some hillbilly theme like moonshine, a wagon, or mining. It was fun!

chairlift gatlinburg

hillbilly golf gatlinburg

We decided to have dinner out for our last night of vacation, so we ate at the downtown Gatlinburg Bubba Gump Shimp Co. It ended up being a really disappointing [and expensive] experience, and it reminded us why we usually avoid such cheesy chain restaurants!

Although I was sad our vacation was coming to a close, we both felt like we saw everything Gatlinburg had to offer us. Our favorite parts of the trip were definitely time spent in nature and getting to call our gorgeous cabin home for a week. We had fun taking in downtown Gatlinburg, but there’s definitely such a thing as “too much” of such a tourist trap.

On our way out of Gatlinburg on Friday, I was amused to see that they were putting up the town’s Christmas lights. Is it that time of year already?!
